Home | Tips & Ideas | Origami | Square Origami Paper My papers rectangular, but I need a perfect square!
Information on this page was supplied by paperfolding designer and author David Mitchell. More detailed information on specialist aspects of origami can be accessed at www.origamiheaven.com Most origami designs are folded from squares, and the squarer your squares are the easier the designs will be to fold, and the better the result will be. Origami bought in packs should already be cut into perfect squares. If you use any other kind of paper you'll probably need to cut the square from a rectangle for yourself - so it won't be perfectly perfect, but just perfectly good enough. Here's the best way to go about it. You may find it helpful to read through the section 'How do I start to fold?' before you do this.
Step 1: Fold the right hand edge up to lie exactly along the top edge, hold the two edges firmly in alignment and flatten the crease. (For more detail on how to do this see 'How to make accurate folds' above.) Step 2: It is easier to make the fold with the paper one way round and the cut after it has been rotated through 180 degrees. Step 3: Hold the layers in alignment at the spot marked with a circle. Using
scissors, cut the right hand end of the paper away along the edge x-y. You will
get a more accurate result if you start at x and cut towards y. |
