Embossing on Vellum
Embossing is an elegant way to enhance the beauty of vellum paper. It is a small project that can change the entire outlook of vellum. There are various embossing techniques, but the simplest is heat embossing. Heat embossing uses powders that are melted on the paper to create a raised image.
There are a variety of powders for heat embossing. Most produce a shiny image, though some combination powders have colors that melt at different rates and appear quite nice "in the rough". Embossing powders come in plain colors, opalescent,
glitter, and metallic.
This easy embossing technique will save a lot of money compared to the cost of having your invitations professionally embossed.
Step by Step Heat Embossing Instructions
- Just sprinkle powder over a freshly stamped design or a printout on vellum as soon as it comes out of the printer
- Tap and shake off any excess powder.
- Then apply heat with a heat tool. An inexpensive solution to the heat tool is a clothing iron. It works just as well, but be sure not to hold it too close to the vellum paper. Use a up and down stroke with the iron.
- There you go, you have embossed paper!
If you want to try something new, try mixing small quantities of your embossing powders together to create new colors!
